Intikhab-e-Kalam: Allama Iqbal
This book contains a selection from the poems of Sir Dr Muhammad Iqbal, the first Urdu poet credited with a systematic philosophy, i.e. Khudi which means self-awareness or loftiness of character, the basic concepts he employed towards presenting Pan-Islamism and Muslim independence in India as ideals to strive for. Iqbal said that the state would be a territorial specification of Islam, but would not be church; it would be based on social contract. His poetry inspired many generations, both before and after independence, since infinite struggle and not a goal are his ideals. Iqbal struck a responsive cord in his readers; more than any lyrical poet has been able to strike. His style is better described as scriptural rather than as the grand style usual in religious themes. He is widely regarded as the greatest Urdu poet, at least of the twentieth century.
