This book is representative definitive selection of Masood Ashar’s writings. Two of Ashar’s collections are out of print and are difficult to obtain. This selection draws upon his stories representing various aspects of his work and makes these available in a more accessible form for the larger reading public they deserve.

Author Description

Masood Ashar is a leading writer and prominent journalist from Pakistan. He has concentrated on short-stories and his work is well known in literary circles and selections from it have also been translated into English. Masood Ashar started writing as a young man in the early days of Pakistan but then entered a period of silence. He shot into prominence with his stories focusing on the severe crisis which Pakistan experienced in the late 1960s leading the eventual breakup of the country in 1971. Versions of Truth is the title of one of his stories, which was translated by Faiz Ahmed Faiz and published on an international level. In subsequent fiction, he has depicted the various contradictions in Pakistan’s society through characters caught in dilemma situations. His second collection was praised highly by Intizar Hussain. Masood Ashar has to date published three collections of short-stories.


Compiler: Dr Asif Farrukhi is a professor, short story-writer and critic. He has compiled many anthologies of Pakistani writers He regularly contributes to a leading daily, Dawn Karachi and different literary periodicals. He is currently editing and publishing a literary miscellany in Urdu Duniyazaad. He received the Prime Minister’s Award for
Literature in 1995 and the Tamgha-i-Imtiaz in 2005.
