Karachi, 14 Oct.: Oxford University Press organized a talk on'India-Pakistan Peace Process Today’ by the notable lawyer, historian, and political commentator, A. G. Noorani. Abdul Gafoor Noorani practises as an Advocate in the Supreme Court of India and the Bombay High Court. He is an expert on constitutional and political issues and writes regular columns for The Hindustan Timesand Frontline and contributes to Indian and foreign periodicals. He has authored several books including Islam and Jihad, Citizens’ Rights, Judges and State Accountability, The Kashmir Question, India: The Super Powers and the Neighbours, Constitutional Questions in India: The President, Parliament and the States, andThe Trial of Bhagat Singh: Politics of Justice (Oxford University Press Pakistan, 2001).
The talk held at the Oxford University Press Head Office witnessed a large turnout of journalists, academics, bureaucrats, and diplomats. Speaking on the occasion, Noorani, who lives in India, said that once again India and Pakistan have been placed at a critical juncture in their sixty-one year old volatile relationship. He was of the opinion that the ever-widening, deadly cycle of conflict between the two countries calls for a dialogue and better understanding of the causes of discord and hostility. This he sees as a crucial step towards peacefully resolving the disputes plaguing Pakistan and India and strengthening the economic and political ties between them. While introducing A. G. Noorani in her welcome address, Ameena Saiyid, Managing Director, Oxford University Press, said that not only is Mr Noorani outspoken and articulate; he is also known for his reasoned and sound treatment of all the issues that he discusses. She added that many of the issues on which Mr Noorani has been expressing himself are of deep concern to us in Pakistan as well.
